What is the Average Credit Score in the U.S.?

"What is the average credit score" is a popular question. We all want to know how our scores stack up against those of the rest of the country. The national average credit score in America is 693. The average American credit score for adults aged 18-24 is 670, whereas older consumers, aged 65 and up, hold a national average credit score of 736. This discrepancy is most likely due to length of credit history, which is an important factor in credit score calculations.

The majority of the population has a credit score between 550 and 800. Only 13% have above an 800, and 15% score lower than a 550. The averages can also be broken down by state. Texas holds the lowest average credit score, of 651. South Dakota has the highest average score of 710.

The median credit score for the U.S. is 723. That means that half of the population has a score higher than 723 and half has a score lower.
