LifeLock is a company that offers its more than 1.5 million members protection from identity theft. It is based in Tempe, Arizona, and was founded in 2005. LifeLock is backed by venture capitalist firm Bessemer Venture Partners and serves every U.S. state, plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Product

Becoming a LifeLock member means that LifeLock will take certain actions to protect you from identity theft. One of the biggest features of membership is that a specialist will place a fraud alert on your behalf with the credit bureaus. However, a recent court ruling may hamper LifeLock's ability to place fraud alerts on the behalf of its customers legally.

LifeLock also removes your name from pre-approved credit card mailing lists and regularly orders your credit reports for you. If you lose your wallet, LifeLock will contact your credit card companies, banks and other necessary institutions, and complete all necessary paperwork to save you the hassle.

Their eRecon service monitors criminal websites for illicit use of your personal information. The company also guarantees $1 million towards legal and investigative fees should your identity be stolen while you are a LifeLock member.*

Marketing

LifeLock's marketing campaign revolves around publishing (in big, bold type, no less) the Social Security number of Todd Davis, LifeLock CEO. Davis feels so confident in the effectiveness of LifeLock's services that he is willing to expose himself to increased risk of identity theft by compromising his SSN.
