Obtaining Student Health Insurance
Student health insurance programs are becoming more and more common. Often college students are covered by their parents' insurance. If not, they have to rely on the services of their school's student health center. These school clinics vary in quality, and can't handle complex diseases or intensive emergency care. Student health insurance provides a bridge of protection that can be very worthwhile.
Reasons to Buy Student Health Insurance
- If you are traveling abroad (look for "International Student Insurance" policies)
- If you are in med school where you'll be commonly exposed to many diseases
- If you need more protection that the student health center can offer
- If you are not eligible for government assistance which often has strict income guidelines
- If you are active in sports with a high risk of injuries
Keep in mind that not all students who have coverage through their parents get the services they need at the time and place they need it. If the plan that the parent enrolled in is other than an indemnity plan, the student faces the possibility of being denied services if the particular managed care plan does not have a network of providers in the vicinity of the school.
As always, when considering buying insurance, get a minimum of 4 quotes because rates vary. The Internet is a great way to shop for student health insurance - there are many policies out there as this insurance sector continues to grow.
